At first glance, these appear to be ordinary rings with no gems or markings. However,
once worn, the wearer will start to notice things start going his/her way more often
than not. When worn, if the character fails a random roll (except hitrolls and
damage rolls) by 2 or less, the character gets a second chance at the roll,
done in secret by the DM.
Also, if the character rolls a critical fail (sometimes referred to as a "botch"), the DM
does a secret reroll to see if the critical is avoided. If the reroll is successful, then
the character avoids the critical failure (it is treated as a normal failure).
A few of these rings (9 or 10 on a d10) come with extra enhancements, tailored to a
specific group of classes. Though they can be worn by any character, their extra
abilities only function when used by the appropriate classes. Each specialized ring
comes with one of the listed abilities for the appropriate classes:
- Arcane Ring of Pure Luck (wiz/sor/brd): +2 luck bonus to Concentration and Spellcraft checks for Arcane spells, or
+2 luck bonus to the DC of all the caster's Arcane spells
- Troubleshooter's Ring of Pure Luck (rog): +2 luck bonus to Search and Spot, or +2 luck bonus to Open Lock and Disable Device
- Divine Ring of Pure Luck: (clr/dru) +2 to Concentration checks and Spellcraft checks for Divine spells, or +2 to
the DC of all the caster's Divine spells
- Combatant's Ring of Pure Luck (war/pal/rng/mnk/bar): Natural attack rolls of
19 count as natural 20s, with a +2 luck bonus to confirm the critical threat.
Due to the powerful and whimsical nature of the magic in these rings, there is a chance a particular ring is cursed (1 or 2 on a d10).
Though the ring will appear beneficial when identified, it will cause the opposite affects listed above.
Cursed rings cause any roll that succeeds by 2 or less to instead fail, and on a normal failure,
the DM does a secret reroll. If the reroll is a failure or a critical failure, then the character's roll becomes a critical failure.
The cursed version of the Combatant's ring causes a natural 20 to instead automatically miss.
Cursed rings can be only be removed with a "Wish" or "Limited Wish" spell, or by a "Remove Curse" spell cast by a
priest of at least 14th level.
