At first glance, these appear to be ordinary rings with no gems or markings. However,
once worn, the wearer will start to notice things start going his/her way more often
than not. When worn, if the character fails a random roll (except hitrolls)
by 2 or less (10% or less), the character gets a second chance at the roll,
done in secret by the DM.
Also, if the character rolls a critical fail (sometimes referred to as a "botch"), the DM
does a secret reroll to see if the critical is avoided. If the reroll is successful, then
the character avoids the critical failure (it is treated as a normal failure).
A few of these rings (roughly 10%) come with extra enhancements, tailored to a
specific group of classes. Though they can be worn by any character, their extra
abilities only function when used by the appropriate classes. Each specialized ring
comes with one of the listed abilities for that class:
- Wizard's Ring of Pure Luck: +10% to Learn Spells, or Spell Failure reduced
by 10%
- Rogue's Ring of Pure Luck: +10% to Open Locks, or +10% to Find/Remove Traps
- Priest's Ring of Pure Luck: Spell Failure reduced by 10%, or Opponents
suffer -1 penalty to saves vs. the priest's spells
- Warrior's Ring of Pure Luck: Natural hitroll of 19 in combat counts as
a natural 20.
Due to the powerful and whimsical nature of the magic in these rings, there is a 20%
chance a particular ring is cursed. Though the ring will appear beneficial when
identified, it will cause the opposite affects listed above. Cursed rings can be only
be removed with a "Wish" or "Limited Wish" spell, or by a "Remove Curse" spell cast by a
priest of at least 14th level.
